AFL Spartanburg Receives ISO 14001 Certification
04/02/2008
Spartanburg, SC - Ending January on a high note, AFL's Spartanburg facilities completed the requirements for receiving ISO 14001 certification. ISO 14001 specifies the actual requirements for an environmental management system (EMS) and identification of the operation’s environmental aspects. The EMS ensures that the company is managing these aspects, such as waste generation, air emissions, and wastewater, properly not allowing them to impact the local environment. .
AFL's environmental policy states that all associates will comply with laws, prevent pollution and continually improve our impacts on the environment, meaning each associates agrees to dispose of waste properly, comply with all training and Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) rules, and submit ideas on how to reduce our impacts on the environment. In addition, each associate is keenly aware of how to respond in an emergency.
“Our associates should be proud of this accomplishment,” states Don Heatherly, EHS Manager for all three AFL facilities. “Receiving and maintaining this certification will help us sustain our business into the future while continually reducing our impact on the environment.”
AFL has many objectives associated with this certification including a 3% reduction in energy usage (electric, natural gas and propane), a 3% reduction in water usage and landfill waste, and zero non-compliance (number of violation notices) annually.
“As businesses and the community continuously move towards a “green” initiative, we want to be sure we’re doing our part,” stated Jody Gallagher, President and CEO of AFL. “This is the first step – a monumental one – and we look forward to seeking new ways to make this a better, “greener” community for everyone.”
