AFL Introduces New Swage Bus Accessories

Spartanburg, SC – AFL’s newest product line, Swage Substation Bus Accessories, enables installation of aluminum bus accessories without a welder. Using a process called swaging, electric utilities can install a substation bus accessory using a hydraulic press.

“AFL’s swage products allow electric utilities to install accessories faster and more efficiently, lowering installation costs,” stated Gary Harter, AFL commercial manager. “Swaging is the ideal solution for areas with shortages on qualified welders or when inclement weather conditions prohibit installation.”

To make the compression possible, AFL uses its Swage 65 Ton Press Assembly, a portable construction and maintenance tool designed to swage bus accessories onto a bus pipe. The power unit works with one to four inch head assemblies and features interchangeable press heads and dies. The new product line provides a full series of fittings involving end caps, expansion joints, couplers, tee and vee connectors, stirrup and ground studs, and terminal connectors.

Swage accessories complement AFL’s entire substation family which are made for low voltage up to 765 kV applications that involve cable, pipe, flat or tubular bus and integral web connections. With the new swage product line, AFL is the only manufacturer that offers a full line of fittings involving bolted, welded and compression applications.
