AFL Donates Trees to Intermediate Students and Teachers in School District Five

Spartanburg, SC – AFL partnered with District Five Schools to provide a longleaf pine tree in honor of fifth and sixth grade students and teachers in the area. More than 1,300 trees were donated to Beech Springs Intermediate and Berry Shoals Intermediate schools in Duncan, South Carolina. The initiative is part of AFL’s Take Root program which has a goal to plant 12,000 trees by the end of 2015.

“Part of AFL’s Environment, Health and Safety program focuses on environmental stewardship. Planting trees is one aspect of this,” commented Corie Culp, AFL’s community relations manager. “By teaching children about our environment at a young age, we can help preserve it for years to come.”

AFL’s first goal was to plant 5,000 trees by 2010. Having exceeded that goal, AFL set a loftier goal—to plant 12,000 by the next five years. Over the past five years, AFL has hosted Take Root events on its campuses both domestic and international and with various organizations in communities where AFL has operations.

AFL has an extensive Community Outreach Program that provides grants to nonprofit organizations, encourages associates to serve in their communities, provides disaster relief and sponsors various events in the community, plus much more.
