AFL Increases Maximum Fiber Count for CentraCore OPGW

Spartanburg, SC – AFL, a leading manufacturer of fiber optic cable and accessories, introduces a higher fiber count Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) cable. AFL’s CentraCore OPGW is now offered in fiber counts up to 96 fibers in a central single stainless steel tube design.
CentraCore OPGW features a gel-filled, laser-welded, hermetically-sealed stainless steel tube inside of a central aluminum pipe to protect the optical fibers from crushing forces and electrical faults. Additionally, a layer of aluminum clad steel and/or alloy wires are stranded around the central unit to provide excellent protection against environmental stresses.
“CentraCore OPGW has always featured a high density of fiber, but previous maximum fiber counts were limited to 72 fibers in a CentraCore OPGW,” commented Jon Potter, product manager for AFL’s aerial cable systems. “This development pushes AFL’s capability even further so that OPGW customers can maximize data throughput and maintain a high fiber density in a lightweight, robust cable design.”
As the fiber count within CentraCore increases or decreases, the outer diameter remains constant, streamlining an electric utility’s hardware selection. Customers using a 48-fiber or 72-fiber CentraCore OPGW can increase their fiber count to 96 fibers and possibly maintain the same suspension hardware and accessories, eliminating confusion and saving time and money.
