AFL Awards $15K Grant to Middle Tyger Community Center
27/03/2017
Spartanburg, SC – March 27, 2017 – AFL presented a $15,000 grant to the Middle Tyger Community Center (MTCC), an organization that provides holistic resources to enhance and support the lives of people in Spartanburg County. Made possible by AFL’s Community Outreach Program, the grant will support the This Is My Child program and provide scholarships for low-income families and enhance the science curriculum for the new 3K class.
“Research demonstrates that participation in quality early learning can boost children’s educational attainment and earnings later in life,” commented Andrea Moore, executive director of MTCC. “Children who attend high-quality preschool programs are less likely to utilize special education services or be retained in their grade, and are more likely to graduate from high school, go on to college and succeed in their careers.”
The goal of This Is My Child is to prepare at-risk children for success in school. MTCC currently serves 44 children from six weeks through 3K. This Is My Child provides quality childcare and preschool education while the young parents attend high school, college or GED classes. Tuition is offered on a sliding scale based on income.
Moore continued, “With a high percentage of children enrolled in the program zoned for Wellford Academy of Science and Technology, a magnet Title 1 school with a science focus, the grant from AFL will help build a strong science component in our preschool, helping to create a seamless transition into our public schools.”
This Is My Child won the United Way of the Piedmont’s Program Excellence Award in 2013 and in 2016, and maintains a 5-star rating from Quality Counts and an A+ rating from ABC.
AFL has an extensive Community Outreach Program that provides grants, sponsorships, associate engagement projects, disaster relief and more. For additional information on AFL and its community initiatives, visit www.AFLglobal.com.
